Step 3 gently lift the shingles.
Flashing on roof lifting.
Hi we had our house inspected yesterday as we are selling our property and one of the things that came up in the inspection was flashing that is lifting.
Roofing flashing lifting up.
Lift the shingles that are near the valley flashing.
Open valleys have metal flashing to protect this critical area of the roof.
Use a caulking gun to seal the vent flashing.
The flashing is located at intersection points on your roof in spots such as peaks and valleys where water is likely to collect and pool.
Step 4 generously apply roof cement.
If you are working with valley flashing lift the edges of the surrounding shingles and spread roofing cement on the flashing about 6 inches in from the edge of the shingles.
Once you have determined the flashing does indeed need to be sealed gently lift the shingles laid on top of the flashing so you can reseal them.
Flashing is critical to certain areas of your roof namely the places where the roof surface meets a wall sidewalls and front walls the low points where two roof slopes meet called valleys roof protrusions bathroom kitchen vents skylights and the roof s edges rakes and eaves.
The edge of the roof has thin metal flashing that helps water drip off the roof without damaging the home or causing a leak.
And in our experience when a single piece of flashing extends only a few inches under the shingles especially on a long roof slope and worse on a roof that happens to slope slightly towards rather than away from the abutting vertical building wall the accumulated roof drainage water near the bottom end of the roof wall intersection will.
It may be quite a labor but it pays off with a strong roof.
Apply roofing cement 6 inches from the edge below the shingles.
Apply enough bead as determined by you between the vent pipe and the flashing.
Here is a guide on how to install lead flashing to your roof.
Seal the seam between the cap and step flashing with urethane roofing cement or silicone caulking compound as shown at right.
Roof buckling can occur in any roof at any time after roof installation.
It is important to take great care in lifting the shingles because you don t want to cause any damage.
Then spread the roofing cement under the shingles that are surrounding it.
Step 5 seal vent flashing.
