Recently i learned about facing a quilt instead of binding it.
I usually try and have a backing that matches the front as well but not this time.
Your quilt edges are nicely finished and you won t see the facing from the front.
You need one facing strip for each edge of your quilt.
We ll sew the strip to the quilt using a 1 4 seam allowance leaving a 1 facing on the back side of the quilt.
Facing a quilt is a way to bind your quilt without having the binding show on the front.
No binding no bulk edge finish for small quilted projects duration.
Step 1 square off all edges of excess batting and backing.

You attach facing in a way similar to the way binding is attached.
Step 2 measure all the vertical sides of the quilt.
The facing will turn to the back side press the facing towards the back and give each corner a bit of a light pressing before finishing.
Don t forget the quilt label.
It allows you to take the quilting all the way to the edge can add a nice professional and more artful looking finish especially to a smaller quilt and i also find quilts seem to hang better and flatter with this method.
Handstitch the facing to the back of the quilt.
I use 2 1 2 wide strips pressed wrong sides together along the length to yield a double layered strip 1 1 2 wide.
Cut the side strips the length of the quilt less 2 inches i cut these 2 x 10 inches.
Fold the binding completely to the back.
Cut the top and bottom strips the width of the quilt plus 2 inches mine are 2 by 11 5 inches.
Had this been a quilt for a show i would have used a tan colored thread.
Stitch the facing in place using matching thread.
I have used black here to make the stitches a bit more visible for the purpose of the example.
Press under one edge of each facing piece by you could.
